SAAR

Alex was more than I had dreamed of.

When we got dressed again, our eyes kept meeting. His were shy and soulful and so beautiful. When he thought I didn't see him watching, his gaze always fixed on me, watching my body. I knew he was pleased by it and by all the pleasure that I had offered him. I would continue to please him, even more than our first night and the tender morning we'd shared. I did not believe I had ever been so happy.

We found the bathing pool together, exploring the long corridors with our hands entwined. Giggling together when we accidentally stumbled into a room where a couple was asleep, entwined in one another's arms, just the way we had been so recently. It warmed my heart in such a fulfilling way. When we found the open room with the pool in the center, the morning sun was already shining through the windows, warming the space. Still, nothing compared to the inviting warmth of Alex's skin. Not even the sun.

We undressed again and went in together.

The water was warm enough, but Alex shivered when he entered it.

“I'm not going to stay in here long,” he said at once.

Soap had been left on plates set along the edges. He went to one and grabbed it, quickly scrubbing himself top to bottom. He started with his hair, then face and then worked his way down.

My mouth dried as I watched him clean his abdomen, then his genitals, even his backside, then quickly down his legs.

He rinsed off quickly, unaware of my attention.

Without waiting, he quickly climbed out of the water and grabbed a towel, drying himself off, still shivering as he quickly pulled his clothes back on.

“Is it really so cold for you?” I asked.

He nodded.

“The days here are too hot, the nights are freezing, add to that a cold bath...”

He shuddered.

“I'll be lucky not to get pneumonia and die.”

I stood up abruptly, fear lancing me.

“What is no-mona-ia?”

He bit back an inappropriate smile.

“Pneumonia,” he repeated slowly. “It's a disease that humans can get from being too cold.”

“It's not funny,” I reprimanded, head spinning. Even on his first night, I'd noticed his strange behaviour to the cold. He'd shivered all the way to the alpha hold, and then he'd started to sweat, hadn't he? I remembered his damp hair with new understanding. Humans couldn't regulate their temperature at all, could they? For me, when I was a bit too warm, a pool like this one was perfect to cool down in.

“You will never be cold again,” I promised.

This time, he did smile, a tenderness in his eyes.

“I'll be fine,” he said. “I was just exaggerating.”

Still, I hurriedly cleaned myself and climbed out of the water, careful to dry myself completely and get dressed before going to him.

I pulled him into his arms, rubbing the fabric over his back to warm him.

“The sunlight will warm us soon.”

Alex chuckled.

“That’s no better, really. But don’t worry. Like I said, I’ll survive.”

“Survival is the bare minimum,” I argued, upset.
